There are many misconceptions about what a doula does, or why and when doula support is helpful. While birth is uncertain and relinquishing control is a part of the process, studies show that having doula support improves the birthing experience and leads to more positive birth outcomes.

Although birth doula’s have become common, especially in Boulder, Colorado, there is still some obscurity around what exactly a birth doula does. My hope is that this page brings some clarity and a better understanding of what I can offer you if you hire me.

A birth doula is a non-medical role. You will have your chosen team of medical professionals at your birth, this can include doctors, midwives, nurses, etc. who will be focused on your medical needs. Your doula will instead offer continuous support, comfort, and education to help you have the most empowering birth possible.

While the specific actions of a doula are plentiful and can vary from one person to the next, here is a general idea of what you can expect when hiring a doula:

Educational Support

This includes providing information about birthing options, medical interventions and birth preparations, as well as ensuring understanding during birth.

Physical Support

Assisting with comfort measures, breathing techniques, and positioning during early, active, and pushing stages of labor. This could also include offering resources or recommendations during pregnancy.

Emotional Support

Offering support and encouragement throughout labor to help you achieve your goals, stay grounded, and feel safe throughout pregnancy, labor and postpartum.

Advocacy

Knowing your birth plan, and preferences, and communicating it with your birth team. Your doula sees the full picture of your birth, and continuously brings your best interests, and aspirations forward.
